If you find yourself without a pair of eclipse glasses on April 8, don't worry. There are still some simple ways you can enjoy the eclipse without risking your eyesight.
DIY Eclipse Viewers
Here's a quick and easy way to create a DIY eclipse viewer:
Using a Shoebox
- Cut a hole in the side or lid of a sturdy shoebox.
- Cover the hole with aluminum foil and make a pinhole in the center.
Using a Box and White Paper
- Create a small pinhole in a piece of white paper.
- Place the paper inside a box and position the hole opposite a hole cut in the top of the box.
Important note: Do not use eclipse glasses or handheld viewers with cameras, binoculars, or telescopes. They require different types of solar filters.
When to Look Without Glasses
The only time it's safe to look directly at the eclipse without glasses is when the sun is fully covered during the totality phase. Otherwise, always use eclipse glasses or a certified DIY viewer.
